Certification

UL 2271

UL 2271 is a safety standard specifically designed for batteries used in light electric vehicles (LEV), including electric bikes. This certification addresses various safety aspects, such as electrical and mechanical safety, fire resistance, and overall performance. Here's why UL 2271 is essential:

  • Protection Against Overcharging: UL 2271 ensures that the battery has built-in protection against overcharging, a crucial feature for preventing potential hazards.
  • Temperature Controls: The certification requires batteries to have temperature controls, preventing overheating and enhancing overall safety during use.
  • Short Circuit Protection: Batteries undergo rigorous testing to guarantee they can withstand and prevent short circuits, a common cause of battery-related incidents.
  • Crush and Impact Resistance: UL 2271 mandates batteries to resist crushing and impacts, adding an extra layer of durability and safety.

"THE GOLD STANDARD" Certification

UL 2849

All Bosch Batteries are UL 2849 Certified

UL 2849 is another important standard for batteries used in light electric vehicles. While similar to UL 2271, it focuses on additional safety aspects, making it a comprehensive choice for high-quality electric bike batteries. Here are key features of UL 2849:

  • Enhanced Mechanical Strength: UL 2849 includes requirements for increased mechanical strength, ensuring the battery can withstand a variety of physical stresses.
  • Vibration Resistance: Electric bikes can experience vibrations during rides. UL 2849 addresses this by requiring batteries to resist vibrations, reducing the risk of malfunctions.
  • Advanced Safety Features: This certification goes beyond the basics, incorporating advanced safety features to meet the evolving standards of electric bike technology.

How a Lithium-ion Battery Works

A lithium-ion battery generates the electromotive force by displacing lithium ions. While the eBike is in motion the electrodes move from the negative anode, via the drive unit, to the positive cathode. The lithium ions provide balance. The reverse process takes place when the battery is charged.

eBike Range Calculator

The range of Bosch batteries depends on numerous different factors.

  1. Battery Size: Bigger batteries generally mean a longer range.
  2. Terrain: Riding on hills uses more battery than riding on flat ground.
  3. Rider Weight: Heavier riders use more battery power.
  4. Speed: Faster speeds use up the battery more quickly.
  5. Tire Pressure: Properly inflated tires help the battery last longer.
  6. Assist Level: Using higher assist levels drains the battery faster.
  7. Weather: Extreme temperatures, especially cold, can affect the battery.
  8. Maintenance: Well-maintained bikes are more efficient.
  9. Stopping and Starting: Constant stops and starts use more battery than continuous riding.
  10. Accessories: Adding extras like lights or phone chargers can use more power.

In simple terms, how you ride, the bike's condition, and external factors like terrain and weather impact how far your electric bike can go on a single charge.

Recycling

Sustainable Use of Raw Materials

The carbon footprint of an eBike is largely determined by the production, use and recycling of the battery. The longer an eBike is used and the more trips by other means of transport it replaces, the better for the environment. To ensure that valuable raw materials can be reused at the end of its service life, the battery must be properly recycled.

Damaged or defective eBike batteries should be taken to the nearest approved collection site, a qualified dealer or local hazardous waste disposal facility for safe disposal.

Service Life

Charging Batteries

The service life of Bosch batteries is influenced mainly by the type and duration of use. Like every lithium-ion battery, a Bosch battery also ages over time, even if you do not use it. Over time it loses capacity life expectancy is 6-10 years.

Factors that shorten the service life:

  • Heavy-load use
  • Storage at over 86 °F ambient temperature
  •  Prolonged storage in a completely charged or completely discharged state
  •  Parking of the eBike in the blazing sun
  • Regular complete "discharge" of the battery

Factors that extend the service life:

  • Low-load use
  • Storage at moderate temperatures – ideally at room temperature
  • The ideal battery charge level is between 30% und 60%
  • Parking the eBike in the shade or a cool location
